Our Question

Shall the state Representative (or Senator) from this district be instructed to vote in favor of a resolution calling upon the Congress and the President to:

1. Prevent cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Veterans benefits, or to housing, food and unemployment assistance;

2. Create and protect jobs by investing in manufacturing, schools, housing, renewable energy, transportation and other public services;

3. Provide new revenues for these purposes and to reduce the long-term federal deficit by closing corporate tax loopholes, ending offshore tax havens, and raising taxes on incomes over $250,000; and

4. Redirect military spending to these domestic needs by reducing the military budget, ending the war in Afghanistan and bringing U.S. troops home safely now.

Question 4, on the November 6 ballot throughout Boston and a third of the state, is the largest public policy question in at least several decades, according to the Massachusetts Secretary of State’s office. It has been endorsed by four Mass. congressmen, 23 state legislators, and many local elected officials.

Budget for All Update, October 22

Rep. Jim McGovern joined Mayor David Narkewicz of Northampton, state reps Peter Kocot and Ellen Story, two candidates, and two city councilors and spoke out for the Budget for All at Northampton High School on Monday, October 15.  “You are the real patriots. We need a new activism, a budget that reflects the values of this country…. This [ referendum ] ought to stiffen the backbone of some of those representatives. I look forward to reading in Congress the list of communities that has passed it,” McGovern told the crowd of 125 people.   Video

Jo Comerford of the National Priorities Project presented the facts and figures underlying the Budget for All at the Northampton forum.  Check out her slides and use them in your own presentations!   Another great presentation of the issues is the article by Rebecca Thiess of the Economic Policy Institute which ran in the Huffington Post on October 19.

Jeff Napolitano of AFSC moderated, reminding the guests that MLK condemned militarism and saying that Massachusetts wants social uplift, not spiritual doom.

Budget for All Update - October 15

October 15, 2012

Take the day off on Election Day!  In only three short weeks, one million Massachusetts voters will decide on the Budget for All Referendum, and many of them will not be clear about it before walking into the polling places.   We need volunteers to hand out palm cards or flyers at the polls to reach out to those voters as they walk in.

Does your town have a plan for Election Day?   Find volunteers to cover the polls, particularly at the heaviest times, 7-9am and 4-8pm.   Post rally signs near the polls and hand out materials to voters.   For more info or to sign up: budget4allmass.org/election-day.
Inline image 2Have you seen the new flyer design?   This eye-catching flyer is great for reaching out to voters.  Contact Paul Shannon at AFSC (pshannon@afsc.org, 617-623-5288) and tell him how many copies you need and what town(s) they will be used in (so we can fill in the right question number).

Tell the Press in Your Town about the Budget for All

We are trying to get a news story or op ed into the local paper(s) and “patch” website in each community where our referendum will be on the ballot as well as any regional paper that covers that community.

Can you help?

Attached below is a model press release that you may or may not choose to draw on.
